Today's Journal from Amy Bower and Kate Fraser
Today has been another calm day at sea! We can see land for the first time since Wednesday. As we look off the starboard side of the ship, (that's the right side if you are facing the bow), we can see the coast of Newfoundland.
A reporter from the Cape Cod Times interviewed Amy and me! He wanted to know a little bit about Perkins as well as information about Amy's research. I told him about our trips to Woods Hole last year and Amy's visits to Perkins.
One of the most interesting parts of my experience on the ship is hearing about all the exciting places that the crew members and scientists have visited on their voyages. Earlier today one of the engineers told me about a trip he took to Chile, in South America. When the ship docked, he and other members of the expedition went on shore. They visited a street market where the native people were selling various products. The engineer's friend bought a sword that was over six feet long and a piece of llama fur. The man dressed up in the fur and carried the sword back to the ship, pretending he was Conan the Barbarian!
We saw a beautiful sunset again this evening as we were eating supper. The food on the ship is delicious. For breakfast today I had French toast. For lunch we enjoyed shrimp with pasta, and for supper, roasted chicken, both served with a terrific tossed salad.
